The Montreal General Hospital Foundation, a founding partner of the McGill University Health Centre, raises funds in support of excellence in patient care, education and research, primarily at The Montreal General Hospital. These funds are applied to the priority needs of the Hospital and its patients, in accordance with the wishes of donors.
Since its inception as a small but vital facility in downtown Montreal in 1821, the MGH has been a leader in patient care, teaching and research. It was the birthplace of the distinguished Faculty of medicine of McGill University in 1823.
The current Montreal General Hospital opened its doors in 1955. Redevelopment plans will greatly enhance MGH facilities and establish the Hospital as a Level 1 Trauma Centre and Tertiary/Quaternary healthcare facility for the 21st century and beyond.

“We are profoundly appreciative of the generous financial support provided by our donors, whose philanthropy contributes greatly to the leadership of The Montreal General Hospital in patient care, teaching and research. In a very real way, you help make the MGH the very special healthcare institution that it is. As we look to the future, and as our exciting Redevelopment plans unfold, your continued support is more important than ever.”
With our appreciation and warm good wishes,

The Montreal General Hospital Foundation is a founding partner of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC). Thanks to generous contributions from donors like you, the MGHF supports advances in patient care, teaching and research at the MGH.
Over its distinguished 189-year history and with leading support from the community, the MGH has developed into one of the leading healthcare institutions in the country. Today, the expansive and impressive Montreal General, a McGill Teaching Hospital, is home to Centres for Level I Trauma Care and Comprehensive Cancer Care. Indeed, the MGH/MUHC has the highest number of top-ranked specialized cancer teams in the province according to a review by the Quebec Ministry of Health and Social Services.
The Foundation’s Board of Directors, whose mandate is to provide leadership and ensure that the MGHF excels in its mission of fundraising in support of the Hospital. Board members provide governance for the MGHF and stewardship of donated funds. The Board also serves as an advocate for The Montreal General Hospital and the MUHC.
Healthcare is constantly evolving, with important clinical and research advances being achieved every day. The MGH has several important projects planned to take advantage of this progress (see Your support makes an important difference section for more details).
The Montreal General Hospital Foundation was formally established by Quebec charter in 1973 to build philanthropic support for The Montreal General Hospital.
Support from donors has made it possible for the Foundation to invest in excess of $136 million at The Montreal General during the 11-year period ending in 2010, contributing greatly to the Hospital’s pursuit of excellence in patient care, teaching and research.

The McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) is one of the most comprehensive university health centres in North America. It is comprised of six teaching hospitals affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine of McGill University: The Montreal General, Royal Victoria, Montreal Children’s, Montreal Neurological and Lachine hospitals, as well as the Montreal Chest Institute.
Building on the tradition of medical leadership of these hospitals, the MUHC continues to shape the course of academic medicine by attracting clinical and research leaders from around the world and by training the next generation of medical professionals. And it continues to provide the best care for life to patients of all ages.
Clinical Care: Our multidisciplinary teams of healthcare professionals provide tertiary and quaternary care to patients from across Quebec and beyond. We also provide primary and secondary care and trauma emergency services to adults and children in the Montreal region. The seven clinical missions of the MUHC are: Medicine, Surgery, Neurosciences, Pediatric Medicine, Women's Health, Mental Health and Oncology.
Research: The Research Institute of the MUHC is an internationally recognized biomedical and healthcare hospital research centre. The Institute supports over 500 researchers as well as 1,000 graduate and postdoctoral students. It operates more than 300 laboratories devoted to a broad spectrum of fundamental and clinical research and it produces over 1,400 publications per year. Teaching: The MUHC prides itself on the quality and rigour of its clinical and scientific training. Each year, close to 3,000 people train at the MUHC, including 825 medical and surgical residents, 1,075 nurses, 450 medical students and 525 allied-health students. Continuing education programs are also an integral part of providing the best patient care. All physicians at the MUHC are cross-appointed to the McGill University Faculty of Medicine.
Réseau Universitaire Intégré de Santé (RUIS)
The Québec Ministry of Health and Social Services created four integrated university health networks (RUIS) across Quebec in 2003. The MUHC is the university hospital in the McGill hospital network. The affiliated regions include central and western Montreal, the western part of the Montéregie, Outaouais, Abitibi-Temiscamingue, the Cree territory, James Bay and Nunavik. These territories represent a population of 1.7 million people living across 953,000 square kilometres.
The McGill RUIS coordinates tertiary healthcare services, teaching and research activities within this territory and provides specialized care and training activities to the regions.
