Senior Director, Principal Gifts
The Opportunity
The Montreal General Hospital Foundation seeks a seasoned and accomplished fundraising professional to join our team as Senior Director, Principal Gifts. Reporting to the Vice President, Development, the incumbent will play a pivotal role in cultivating, stewarding, and significantly growing a portfolio of major donors with a capacity of $5 million and above. This position offers the opportunity to leverage expertise, seniority, and strategic insight to enhance the Foundation’s major gifts program and contribute significantly to its overall success. As a key player in our development team, the senior director will drive transformational initiatives, cultivate meaningful relationships, and provide expert counsel on major gift strategies. This role also involves supervising the stewardship team to ensure effective donor recognition and engagement strategies. Additionally, it provides the chance to work closely with key volunteers of the Foundation, offering mentorship and strategic input to help bolster the team’s fundraising capacity. Key Responsibilities
- Direct and manage a portfolio of high-capacity ($5M+) prospects and donors, developing and implementing personalized cultivation and solicitation strategies.
- Develop and write compelling proposals and presentations for major and principal gifts, clearly articulating the impact and benefits of giving.
- Structure pitches for transformational initiatives, collaborating with the Communication team and medical leadership to translate visionary ideas into donor-ready materials.
- Supervise and guide the stewardship team to ensure effective donor recognition and engagement strategies are implemented, fostering long-term relationships and maximizing donor retention to achieve fundraising goals.
- Provide strategic counsel and expertise to the President & CEO, the Vice President, Development and the team on major gift strategies, including prospect identification, research, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.
- Cultivate and steward strong relationships with major donors, physicians, researchers, hospital leadership, and key volunteers.
- Lead the solicitation of major gifts, ensuring appropriate recognition and stewardship.
- Collaborate with the development team and other stakeholders to achieve fundraising goals, sharing expertise and best practices, and providing mentorship.
- Identify and qualify new major gift prospects, conducting thorough research to assess capacity and philanthropic interests.
- Track and report on progress toward fundraising goals, providing regular updates to the Vice President, Development.
- Serve as a mentor and resource to other members of the development team, contributing to the overall fundraising capacity of the team.
Education and Experience
- University degree or equivalent combination of education and experience. Advanced degree is an asset.
- Extensive and demonstrable experience in major gift fundraising, with a proven track record of securing gifts at the $5 million+ level.
- Experience working with donor databases and CRM systems.
- Experience working in a healthcare setting or research intensive setting is an asset.
- CFRE designation is an asset.

- This position requires constant oral and written communication in both English and French to effectively engage with a diverse range of stakeholders, including donors, volunteers, and medical leaders.
Main terms of employment
- Full-time, 35 hours/week, Monday to Friday;
- Work in hybrid mode;
- RRSP with employer contribution;
- Group insurance with employer contribution;
- Reports to the Vice-President, Development
- Start date: as soon as possible.
