It is with great regret that we announce the death of Dr Mostafa Elhilali O.C., M.D., Ph.D., F.R.C.S.(C). He passed away on April 29 2017, while attending a conference in Florida.
Dr Elhilali was a world authority in urology and a prostate cancer specialist. He was well known for its compassionate and sensible approach towards patients. He has made legendary contributions to education, and innovations in surgery and urology at large.
He was Professor and Chairman of the McGill University Department of Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief at the McGill University Health Centre and, more precisely, at the Montreal General Hospital. His generosity not only impacted students and urologists around the world, but also the lives of many patients.
Over the years, has authored over 200 peer reviewed publications, 16 chapters and supervised 44 postgraduate students. He has served as President of the Canadian Urological Association, President of the Northeastern Section of the American Urological Association, Secretary General of the Société Internationale d’Urologie.
His numerous realizations have been rewarded on more than one occasion. He received the Gold Medal from the Egyptian Urological Association and other organizations such as the AUA, CUA, QUA, and SIU handed him Lifetime Achievement awards.
In 2011, the Mostafa Elhilali Visiting Professorship in Endourology and Minimally Invasive Urology was created at McGill and the Elhilali-Azrielei Chair in Urology has been established to perpetuate his influence in the field to which he was so devoted.
Dr. Elhilali was also made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2002 and of the Ordre national du Québec in 2009.
The Montreal General Hospital Foundation will be forever grateful for the work he and his wife Cynthia Gordon have done with us over the years. A great man and a great doctor has left us today. The Foundation would like to extend its sincere condolences to Dr Elhilali’s family, to his colleagues and friends.
